now, this movie had a great plot and some scene were really well done but they over did the whole “adam and eve” metaphor and the whole alien and different world thing failed miserably. there is one scene where nicholas cage chases one of these creepy whisper people into the woods and the man opens his mouth and projects this white light and disappears into it. at the end of the movie (spoiler!) his son and another girl is taken in these space ships to another world to start over. now, this would have been a lot better if instead of the space ships they all disappeared into the white light that the whisper people project. that was the only part of the movie that really ruined the experience. it was just way too far of a stretch. i would recommend seeing the movie if you keep an open mind to the ending, but remember, no one is going to save the world in the end, it’s a downer.

i will begin with my discovery of british rock. i think music from across the pond is intriguing because they don’t follow the mainstream american bubblegum pop, but that might be because the bands i listen to are indie or punk rockers. anyway, awhile back i started listening to glasvegas. their hit is geraldine which is about a social worker and his promise to always be there for you, his name is geraldine (obviously). they have this sort of fifties elvis presley rock thing going for them with a classic indie rock twist. i also love the fact that their drummer is a chick. my most recent discoveries from the united kingdom have been republic tigers, foals, and the courteeners. every one of them offers a unique and fresh perspective on the world of british indie rock. the republic tigers are known for their hit buildings and mountains but i love them for their ability to play with pitch and harmonies. they mix their sounds together to create this sort of synthesized but acoustic sound that is truly unique. their lyrics are also powerful and inspirational. they are a great band to listen to if you need to sit down and get some work done or if you just want to close your eyes and let your mind disappear into the music. now the foals are an especially good band because of their range of style. at times they have this jazzy, bluesy feel that makes you feel like you’re in a smoke filled club in downtown chicago and then they have this punk edge that makes you want to head-bang or jump around with a huge crowd during a concert. i love putting them on when i’m driving and turning the radio up loud. the courteeners have a unique loud rock sound that makes you want to dance. this is another band that i play loud when i am driving. the lead singer has this intriguing voice that draw you in and leaves you begging for more. sometimes i wish he was singing for me.

now back to the lovely land of the free and home of the brave. there are so many bands that i love. the killers have this amazing variety of songs that range from punk rock to electronic but they manage to pull it off without flaw. then i have my indie loves, the arcade fire, feist, sufjan stevens, vampire weekend, and the watson twins. my rock obsessions include, of course, the killers, john mayer, citizen cope (a little more jazzy and bluesy though), dave mathews, sara bareilles, and many others. there’s death cab for cutie, jason mraz, and jack johnson that chill me out, the boxer rebellion, andrew bird, and company of thieves that give me my folky rock fix. i don’t know what i would do without all the great bands that are out there and clearly not just in our little country of megapop and rap. i think i have exhausted the amount of babbling i can do about my music but i am sure there will be more to come. i definitely recommend that you go out and invest in some of these artists because they are excellent and have way more talent than most of the top 100 artists today. thank you and i love you all!

music, books, and movies are another huge part of my life. where would a girl be today without her media? i read all different books from memoir to science fiction, fantasy to poetry, and of course, i am open to any and all suggestions. yes, i am a twilight fan and, no, i am not ashamed. other favorites include a great and terrible beauty by libba bray, short stories by miranda july, and all poetry from performance to haiku. my music tastes are a little more specific but i try to keep an open mind. i am a big fan of indie rock and the underground bands that no one has heard of yet. i also listen to a little bit of folk because you can’t find lyrics like that in any other genre (horse feathers and most serene republic are excellent). i refuse to listen to any country music and most hip hop and rap just annoys me, but not all. some mainstream alternative rock is good (the maine, the cab, panic at the disco), but it’s hard to find originality and innovation on the top charts. some of my favorite artists are the killers, glasvegas, augustana, death cab for cutie, rilo kiley, and camera obscura just to name a few. i am entertained by just about any movie except for really stupid comedies because they just make me sick. i don’t know why. take me to an indie film or an action movie and i won’t be bored. a few favorite movies are marie antoinette (the one with kirsten dunst, although the 1938 film wasn’t terrible), across the universe, breakfast at tiffany’s, and i’m not a huge movie buff so don’t expect a lot from me.
